天幕の裏張り

ムガル帝国の皇帝が国政または娯楽目的の旅で設営した贅沢な仮設の野営地の天幕は、美しい織物で裏張りされたものでした。天幕の裏張りの1枚だったこの布からは、このような一時的な住居の華やかさが伝わってきます。細い縁取りには金箔で花と葉のモチーフが施され、中心にはケシの植物と、小型の木または様式化された葉のような文様が交互に描かれています。布の上の図案に接着剤を塗り、金箔をかぶせて表面に押し付けることで模様をつけたものですが、背景のベルベ ットが輝く金箔の装飾によって強調されています。この裏張りが作られたシャー・ジャハーン帝の治世(1627–58年)には、建築物から織物まで、すべての分野で花模様が好まれました。
