中世の教会には、身廊(会衆席)を聖歌隊から分離する内陣障壁がありましたが、13世紀までにはさまざまな物語図で装飾されるようになりました。特にイエスの現世での最後の事件である受難の場面が頻繁に描かれました。この作品は、大司祭の従者マルコスの耳をそぎ落とした後に剣を鞘に収めるペテロ、イエスが奇跡的に耳を元に戻した場面、ユダのイエスへの裏切りの接吻、そしてローマ兵によるイエスの逮捕の4つの重要な出来事を表しています。内陣障壁は、信者の儀式への参加の妨げとなったため、ヨーロッパのほとんどの教会では次第に消滅し、アミアン大聖堂の内陣障壁は1755年に取り壊されました。この作品は、現存するなかでも最大かつ最も保存状態のよいもののひとつです。
