ダビデとゴリアテの戦いを表した皿
皿の上部には、ダビデがゴリアテに戦いを挑んでいる場面が描かれています。戦いではダビデは防戦に回っているようですが、ダビデの兵士が前進し、ゴリアテの兵士は退却している構図からダビデの勝利を予測できます。その下には、勝利したダビデが巨人の頭をはねている姿があります(『第一サムエル記』17:41–51)。これはいわゆる「キプロスの宝」と呼ばれた出土品に含まれた9枚の皿の1枚です。ダビデの一生を古典様式で表したこのような皿は、東ローマ皇帝ヘラクリウスの治世(610–41年)にコンスタンチノープルで作られたもので、6枚は当館が収蔵し、3枚はキプロス博物館にあります。この題材は、ヘラクリウスが628–29年にペルシア帝国に対して決定的な勝利を収め、イスラエルを攻略したことから、ヘラクリウスをダビデの生まれ変わりに見立てているものかも知れません。
