聖母子像

この傑作は、ポリニーに創立した聖クララ会修道院のためにブルゴーニュ公ジャン1世(無怖公、1419年没)またはその夫人であるババリアのマーガレット(1424年没)が作らせたと言われています。聖母マリアに抱かれた巻き毛のイエスは母を見上げ、マリアは書物を膝に置いています。この慈愛に満ちた場面は同時に洗練された神学的な主題を表しており、腰掛にあるラテン語の銘文は、『我は起源より、世界の創造以前に創られた』という、知恵を賛美する『集会の書』の一節(24:14)です。カトリック教会は、13世紀までにはこの節をマリアについて述べているものと考えるようになりました。
