クティシスを人格化した床モザイクの断片

後期ローマおよびビザンチン美術では、抽象的な概念を人格化して表すことがよくありました。長さを測る道具を持ち、宝石で飾られた女性を描いたこの作品は、復元されたギリシャ語の銘により、寛大な寄付や基金設立を意味する『クティシス』の語を人格化したものであることが分かりました。コルヌコピア(豊饒の角)を持った男性の頭の横には、ギリシャ語の『良』の語が刻まれており、恐らく『ご多幸を』を意味する二語の最初の文字だと思われます。大理石とガラス製テッセラ(モザイク用の彩色小片)で描かれたこの作品は、6世紀ビザンチン文化圏全域で作られた優れたモザイク画の典型を成しています。
