野人の飾りのある水差し

この水差しの蓋は、棍棒を持つ髭を生やした人物の像で飾られています。この『野人』のような、中世後期の美術や文学に登場する伝説の人物は、男性的力強さがあると信じられ、森に住み本能のままに生きていると考えられていました。この作品は対のひとつで、ドイツ騎士団の1526年と1585年の目録に記載されている対の水差しであることが確認されています。ドイツ騎士団は、十字軍による宗教遠征の時期に編成された軍事・宗教協会でした。いずれも工房の刻印はありませんが、豊かな都市だったニュルンベルクの金細工師セバスチャン・リンデナストの作品の様式との共通点から、ニュルンベルクで作られたものと思われます。
