ガートルード・スタイン

暖かい褐色のコーデュロイ製のドレスに身を包み、堂々とした風格のスタインを描いたこの有名な肖像は、ピカソのパリのアトリエで描かれました。アメリカ人作家スタインの聡明さと自由な精神に感銘を受けたピカソは、自ら彼女に肖像画の制作を申し出ました。スタインがモデルとしてポ ーズをとり始めたのは1905年の秋のことでした。スタインはそれが90回に及んだと語っていますが、ピカソの創作スピードの速さから考えるとおそらく事実ではないでしょう。1906年春、顔の出来に不満だったピカソはそれを塗りつぶし、秋にパリに戻った時、スタインに会わないまま現在の仮面のような表情に描きかえました。古代美術を思わせる顔立ちは、ピカソがその夏スペインのゴソル滞在中に温めていた彼の新しいスタイルの到来を告げています。ピカソは、キュビズムの原型である頭部を、それ以前の「バラ色の時代」の胴体に描くという大胆な手法によって、驚くほど独創的で象徴的なイメージを創り出しました。
