同世代の多くの画家とは異なり、ケリーは周囲の環境の観察を通して抽象画を制作しました。「私の作品のアイデアは、物事がどのように成り立っているのかを常に探求することから得られる」と彼は語っています。《青、緑、赤》は、1963年から1965年の期間に、この色の組み合わせを使って描いた8連作の大型作品の1作目です。同じ色彩を用いて1958年に描いた《仮面》を思い起こさせるこの作品は、開いた本の表面に落ちた影から着想を得ています。緊迫感のある平坦な形状、そして青、緑、赤という鮮やかな原色が力強い視覚効果を生み出し、図形と背景の関係に変化を与えています。
