父祖が1644年に中国を征服した満州出身の康熙帝(在位1662–1722年)は1698年、江南の支配権を掌握するため遠征し、この巡行を高名な山水画家の王翬に12巻の大巻物に描かせました。三巻目であるこの作品では、中国の聖山のひとつである泰山登山の場面が描かれています。自ら泰山を訪れたことのなかった王翬は、地図や木版画を元に構図を作成しましたが、特定の場所を山水画の古典の想像上の場所に結び付け、伝統的な「青緑」の色調を用いて康熙帝の善政を強調しています。
