バルトロメオ・クリストフォリは1700年頃にフローレンスのメディチ宮廷でピアノを考案しました。現存する最古のピアノであるこの作品は、彼の工房で作られた現存する作品3 台のうちのひとつです。1720年に制作され、現在でも弾くことが可能です。複雑な構造は近代のピアノの仕組みを予見させるものですが、鍵盤も短く、音調のコントラストを可能にするペダルもありません。それに代わって、暖かく優雅な低音域、気迫ある中音域、明快で単発的な高音域から成る3つのはっきり異なる音域があります。主に伴奏用に作られたクリストフォリの考案は、これまでにない音色の優れた柔軟性から、グラヴィチェンバロ・コル・ピアノ・エ・フォルテ(弱音及び強音のグラヴィチェンバロ)と呼ばれました。
