セサンド

オセアニアで作られた弦楽器の最も際立ったもののひとつにセサンドがあります。ロンタール・ヤシの葉から作られた竹筒のツィターです。チモール島で入手したこのセサンドは、おそらく近隣のロテ島出身の職人によって作られたものと思われます。セサンド音楽は超自然的な力があると信じられていました。演奏者は、右手で低音の弦を爪弾きながら、左手で高音域を奏でます。音高は移動可能なブリッジとチューニング用のペグで調整します。セサンドは、世の中は避けることの出来ない運命に左右されるものであり、いずれにしろ人生ははかないものだというような内容の歌の伴奏によく使われました。
