メンチュウセルの石碑

中王国時代には、オシリス(来世の神)の死と復活を祝う祭りが毎年アビドスで行われ、エジプト人は石碑を立て、自分の代理として祭りに永遠に参加することを願う習慣がありました。現存する傑作のひとつであるこの石碑は、管財人のメンチュウセルが奉納したもので、父、息子、娘に付き添われ供卓に座っているところを表しています。碑文には、センウセレト1世の在位17年目に奉納されたことが記載されており、メンチュウセルの事務官としての働きや高潔さ、成功、そして貧しい者たちへの慈善などが称えられています。
