贈呈用杯

エリー運河の建設を後押ししたデウィット・クリントン知事に感謝の印として贈呈するため、ニューヨークの商人数人が一対の大型の杯を共同注文しました。1825年に贈呈されたその片方がこの作品です。フィラデルフィアの銀工房フレッチャー・アンド・ガーディナーは、ローマ時代の壺を手本に杯の本体と取っ手を制作しました。イタリアのチボリにあったローマ皇帝ハドリアヌスの別荘近くで1770年に発掘され、ワーウィック杯と名付けられた有名な杯です。この一対の杯には寓話の人物とエリー運河に沿う光景の装飾が施されています。写真に見えるのはオールバニーで運河の堰の両脇に立つメルクリウス(商いの神)とケレス(農業の神)です。裏面にはヘラクレス(力)とミネルバ(知恵)がロチェスターの水道橋とジェネシー川の滝とともに描かれています。
