スリランカの初期仏教信仰の典型的な聖像は、説法印を結んで教えを説く仏の座像でした。瞑想的なヨガの姿勢で座る仏は、僧衣である仕立てられていない布をきつく体に巻き、南方仏教に見られるように右肩を出しています。髪は短く巻いた螺髪として表されており、髪を切り落とし、王子としての装飾品を手放して物質的な世界を拒絶したことを示しています。目には当初写実性を高めるため貴石または水晶が埋め込まれていました。炎の形をした頭上の突起(肉髻)は、悟りの境地の根本的縁起の印を表しています。
