짙은 갈색의 기둥

이같이 높이 솟은 짙은 갈색의 기둥은 뉴기니 남서부지역의 아스맛족이 근래에 죽은 이들을 기리고 그들의 영혼이 조상들이 있는 곳으로 가도록 기원하는 축제에 사용하기 위해 제작되었습니다. 각 기둥은 나무 한 그루를 뒤집어 뿌리가 날개모양을 형상화하도록 조각하였습니다. 손잡이의 거대한 인간 형상은 사망 후 축제에서 명예를 얻은 이들을 나타내고 있습니다. 기둥 밑부분은 때로 죽은 자들을 사후세계로 인도하는 카누를 묘사하기도 합니다.
