요나와 고래: 자미 알-타우리크의 폴리오
코란에 언급되어 있는 요나와 고래 이야기는이슬람 문화권에서 인기가 많았기 때문에 “연대기 초록”으로 해석되는 이 작품과 같은 세계사 필사본에서 자주 표현됩니다. 그러나 이 작품에는 그림에 딸린 글이 없습니다. 낭독 중에 걸어 두었거나 이 자체로 전시되었을것입니다. 기념비적인 구성, 직접적인 표현과 강렬한 색채는 벽화의 영향을 암시합니다. 이 그림에서 고래는 요나를 해안으로 데려오는데, 요나 주제의 중세 서양 삽화에도 자주 등장하는 것처럼 박 넝쿨이 그의 머리 위로 곡선을 그리며 뻗쳐 있습니다.
