여성용 테이블
미국 대공황이 시대적 배경인 호퍼의 그림여성용 테이블은 여성의 사회적 지위 변화를 반영하였습니다. 여성들은 이 작품에 묘사된 계산대 직원과 웨이트리스로서 인력의 일부일 뿐 아니라 여성이 고객인 매장의 새로운 출자자가 되었습니다. 스케치와 화면 구성에 관한 자세한 노트에 기초하여 작가는 아름답게 진열된 식품, “체리색으로 착색된 목재”, “타일 바닥”, “미인 웨이트리스”, “싸구려 식당의 천박한 색채” 등을 충실히 묘사하였습니다. 밝은 조명과 따뜻하고 심지어 현란한 색채에도 불구하고 특별히 즐거운 분위기는 아닙니다. 두 손님은 서로 대화를 나누고 있지만 계산원과 웨이트리스는 각자의 생각과 일에 정신이 팔려 있습니다. 호퍼의 회화에서 많이 보이는 무표정한 사실주의는 인간의 조건과 장소의 환경과 상관없이 항상 고립감과 소외감을 불러일으킵니다.
