Этот поэтически красивый рисунок, возможно, является этюдом головы Девы Марии для картины Леонардо Мадонна с младенцем и святой Анной, находящейся в парижском Лувре, которой она близко соответствует по размеру и виду. Художник использовал богатое сочетание выразительных средств, мягко нанося штрихи черного, красного мела и угля, чтобы добиться изображения с плавно переходящими тенями, «словно дым» (сфумато), как он описывал эту технику в своих заметках. Необычайная атмосферная мягкость, нежные модуляции формы, тонкая градация света и тени отражают глубокое и научно обоснованное понимание Леонардо оптического феномена.
