Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History

  • Chalice, mid–17th century
    Mexican
    Silver gilt, enamel; H. 10 11/16 in. (27.1 cm)
Marks: Head and M between two columns under a crown (somewhat indistinct)
The Friedsam Collection, Bequest of Michael Friedsam, 1931 (32.100.230)

Once thought to have been made in Madrid because of its design and the stamped M, this chalice is one of a number that document the spread of the distinctively Spanish "Severe" style to Latin America. The mark is that of Mexico City.
