龟壳面具是位于澳大利亚和新几内亚之间的托雷斯海峡群岛上独有的艺术品,其制作方式是把单个龟壳片加热后弯曲至需要的形状,然后刺穿边缘,再用纤维连接起来,制成立体形态。这只面具可能来自马布亚格岛,应该曾用于葬礼和“增加仪礼”(为确保粮食和渔猎丰收而进行的仪式)。在这些仪式上,男人戴上这种叫做“布克”、“克拉尔”或“卡拉”的面具,穿着发出沙沙声的草制舞服,演出原始文化英雄的故事。这只面具可能就是描绘这样一位文化英雄,面具顶上有一只军舰鸟,可能是这位英雄的个人图腾。
