在公元900年至1100年间，中国画家创作的山水图描绘了大自然的壮丽绝美。观画者应该能体会到画中人的感受。在《夏山图》中，行路者正向一座幽静的寺庙走去。画面正中的大山有居高临下的雄伟，仿佛君臣簇拥中的皇帝，其地位在自然界中也无人能及。笔法和水墨技巧之娴熟运用，说明《夏山图》是一位大师于1050年所作。此年代也由图上宋徽宗（1101 – 25年在位）的收藏用印得以佐证。宋徽宗编制的画谱载有三幅题为《夏山图》的作品，作者正是原本并不为人所知的画家屈鼎。
