The Hatch Family
Eastman Johnson American
Considered by Johnson to be his best group portrait, this ambitious tableau of generational wealth was commissioned by Alfrederick Hatch (1829–1904), a Wall Street broker and later president of the New York Stock Exchange, as well as an avid art collector. Gathered in the library of the family home, on Park Avenue at 37th Street, Hatch and his wife, Theodosia Ruggles (1829–1908)—at the right side of the composition—preside over a gathering of three generations. The window wreath suggests the Christmas season, while the painting presents year-round domestic comforts enjoyed by affluent urbanites after the Civil War.
