Textiles’ relatively light weight enabled them to be moved easily throughout the Andean region, resulting in much shared imagery across the central and north coasts of Peru in the period leading up to the Inca Empire. The motifs on this panel, associated with the Chancay culture, the southern neighbors of the Chimú, are closely related to the rich maritime imagery that features prominently in the architectural ornament and textile designs associated with Chan Chan.
