Grand Canal, Venice

second half 19th century
Not on view
An unidentified artist based this sketch on a painting that Turner exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1835 (now Metropolitan Museum of Art, 99.31). Two viewpoints are combined to create a panoramic view that extends from Santa Maria della Salute in the left foreground, to Campo del Taghetto di Santa Maria del Giglio at right. Early owners considered to be by Turner's hand but it is now regarded as a copy.
