Necklace

Distinct blue, green, and yellow enameling on the central pendant of this necklace identifies it with the Kabyle culture, an Amazigh (Berber) group in Algeria. It was fabricated with generous amounts of coral, a gemstone that was believed to provide baraka, or blessing to the wearer. The box-shaped pendant references an amuletic form, or a container in which papers with Qur’anic verses might be stored. Such amulets both protected the wearer and served as a form of adornment.
