The early provenance of the piece has not been established; according to one of the labels on the back it was once in a French collection (perhaps that of Baron Adolphe de Rothschild, Paris (?)). J. Pierpont Morgan, London and New York, (sale, Duveen, New York, May 22, 1922); purchased from Duveen in 1924 by Mrs. Albert E. Goodhart, New York; bequeathed to Robert Lehman in 1952.
