Imadogawa

Katsushika Hokusai Japanese

Not on view

Imado, a famous site in the capital, Edo, was known for the production of roof tiles and sculptural pottery. Against the background of the Imadogawa, a tributary of the Sumidagawa, Hokusai portrayed two potters whose elastic bodies are uniquely stretched. Even though there is no author's signature, the rhythmically fluctuating brushwork in the folds of the potters' robes suggests that it was made during the artist's Sōri period 1794–1804).
