Relief Fragment with Part of the Head of a Man

Middle Kingdom

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 109

The eye, nose, and cheek of a male figure facing to the right are preserved on this fragment. It was carefully carved with the nostril wing raised above the cheek, a dip in front of the eye, and a gently rounded surface in the area of the brow, which was further highlighted with black paint. It is uncertain who was depicted here, but the red color indicates the figure was male.

The face is rendered in sunk relief, which was traditionally used on exterior decoration, but in the Twelfth Dynasty is also found on interior scenes.
