Ibis with maat feather

Late Period–Ptolemaic Period

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 134

This small amulet of a crouching ibis with a maat feather beneath his beak may serve as a funerary amulet: Thoth was the recorder at the Weighing of the Heart in the Afterworld when the heart of the deceased was balanced against the feather of Maat.
