Vita del Tintoretto
Author Carlo Ridolfi Italian
Not on view
A trained painter active in Venice and Dalmatia, Carlo Ridolfi preferred to work in the style of an earlier generation of artists, namely that of Titian and Tintoretto. In 1642, the year in which the Venetian Republic named him a Knight of the Order of Saint Mark, Ridolfi published his biography of Tintoretto. In contrast to Vasari, who was negative concerning Tintoretto's style and abilities, Ridolfi was laudatory of the Venetian artist, whom he considered, along with Titian, to be at the zenith of Venetian painting. The biography was later incorporated into Ridolfi's more encyclopedic treatment of Venetian painting, "Meraviglie dell'arte."
