Normandy Sketchbook

Eugène Delacroix French

Not on view

Delacroix escaped Paris regularly and the change of scenery usually prompted him to take up a sketchbook. This example documents an 1829 visit to an estate, a former Benedictine abbey, owned by his cousin in Valmont, Normandy. It contains graphite sketches (only the first page enhanced with watercolor) of views of the property’s gardens and chapel, as well as nearby sites, such as the seashore at Fécamp and the Château de Tancarville.
