Two Peonies, Leaf from the Japanese edition of the Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual, vol. 1 of 6

After Wang Gai Chinese

Not on view

The original Mustard Seed Garden Painting Manual was subsequently reprinted many times in China, Japan, and Korea. This print comes from the first Japanese edition, published in 1748. The subdued palette of the Chinese original reflects the “scholarly” tastes of the literati, while Japanese artists developed it into a full-color print.
