Door Guardian

China

Not on view

This print features a door guardian, whose unusual red cheeks may reflect the coded facial makeup for military figures in operatic performance. The print may be a rare exemplar of the eighteenth-century Mianzhu print style, in view of the hooked lines at the edges of the figure’s eyes and his wispy curved moustache.
