History of England

British philosopher David Hume's "History of England" was first published in 1754-62 and translated into French soon thereafter. For this 1853 edition, history painter Philippoteaux provided the illustrations. Better-known for his large-scale paintings and panoramas of contemporary military events, the artist was also very active as an illustrator, contributing to a number of popular histories of France, in addition to this history of England. The Met collection contains an album of drawings preparatory to his illustrations for these volumes.
