A peasant going to the market

Anonymous, Italian, 15th century Italian

Not on view

While peasants were often ridiculed, some artists presented them with compassion and dignity. The hair and boots of this figure were originally painted gold and his braies, or baggy shorts, were once the same beautiful shade of blue that appears in the border. The work has suffered over the years, prompting a discerning owner to paste the engraving inside a book in order to preserve it.
