Dead Christ with Angels

Edouard Manet French

Not on view

This is one of only three surviving impressions of the print’s first state. It is lightly etched with extremely fine aquatint in two tones: a lighter one in the figures, where the reserve of the paper creates highlights; and a darker one in the background, which sets off Christ and the angels with dramatic effect. The fragility of this initial campaign may have necessitated re-etching the plate in order for it to withstand repeated runs through the press.
*This work was in Degas’s collection.
