Stamped Images of Fudō Myōō (Achala Vidyaraja)

Japan

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 223

Repeating the name of a Buddhist deity, whether through incantation or inscription, was a common act of devotion among the faithful. Similarly, artworks featuring multiple images of a deity were often sponsored by devotees and date back to the earliest stages of Buddhism in Japan. The sheet affixed to this hanging scroll displays a grid of images of the Wisdom King Fudō Myōō.
