The Infanta Margarita, after Velázquez
Edouard Manet French
Not on view
Like Degas, Manet took a liberal approach in his translation of Velázquez’s Infanta Margarita into etching. His departure from the painted source is especially evident in the simplification of her dress and redirection of her focus. Manet’s bold handling of line reveals his study of Goya’s etchings after Velázquez, particularly in the zigzag shading of the background, which contrasts with the more regular hatching Degas used in the background of his print.
