The images in these 19th century photograph albums capture aspects of Indian life, architecture and landscapes of the broader region. Some of them are representative of the 'colonial gaze' where western travellers, residents and photographers captured their encounters and expressed their fascination through the lens of the camera. These include anomynous talents as well as recognized names such as Samuel Bourne. Other photographers offer an insider's view of colonial Asia, such as the major figure Raja Deen Dayal who was active in Hyderabad and elsewhere, with unique access to the festivals, people and events of the courtly world.
