Quilt, appliqued

ca. 1860
Not on view
This Rose appliqued quilt is very finely made, and the relative naturalism of the repeating stuffed rose pattern makes it unlike any other quilt in the American Wing collection. It is exceptional in both its design and the quilt maker’s clearly evident mastery of sewing techniques. The carefully thought-out rhythmic pattern of the seven repeating rows of rose springs that alternate from row to row, with the sprig facing up in the first row and down in the second, etc., gives the pattern interesting movement across the main field. The rosebud border is more static, but like the rest of the quilt, flawlessly laid out and sewn. While seemingly straightforward, this beautiful quilt is an example of sophisticated quilt design and sewing techniques.
