Plainte Moresque: Portrait of Jaime Bosch

Edouard Manet French
Sitter Jaime Bosch Spanish

Not on view

In this design for a cover to sheet music, Manet portrays his friend, the Catalan composer and guitarist, Jaime Bosch. The musician dedicated this piece for solo guitar, his "Moorish Lament," to Manet, as indicated by the inscription at upper right. Bosch regularly performed at the musical gatherings hosted by the painter and his wife, the pianist Suzanne Leenhoff. The drawing and resulting print are a testament not only to their relationship, but also to Manet's abiding interest in Spanish culture. The composition recalls "The Spanish Singer" of 1860 (49.58.2), the painting with which Manet successfully made his debut at the Salon of 1861.
