Untitled Etching (View of Istanbul)

Aliye Berger Turkish

Not on view

Aliye Berger was one of modern Turkey’s earliest woman artists and most original printmakers. This print illustrates her distinct expressionist style, and her continuous engagement to capture the vibrant city of Istanbul where she lived and worked. This depiction shows Istanbul with its waters, ships, and historic monuments from the Ottoman area. In the back is the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn is traversing the depiction from the left in the front towards the right in the back. On the very right in the back is the historic peninsula, and towards the front on the right are historic buildings of the Balat neighborhood. The view was likely taken from Balat from a point positioned high enough as to see over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus in the back.
