Der Pariser Sammler und Kunstkritiker Theodore Duret, der ein früher Meister der Arbeiten von Gustave Courbet, Édouard Manet und der Impressionisten war, posierte für dieses Portrait in Whistlers Londoner Atelier. Auf Durets Bitte hin portraitierte Whistler ihn im Abendanzug, aber auf Vorschlag des Malers hielt Duret einen rosa Domino – ein Kapuzenkleid zur Maskerade – das die Fleischtöne wiedergibt und die nüchterne schwarz-graue Farbpalette durchbricht. Als exemplarisches Beispiel für Whistlers reifen Stil kombiniert das Portrait einen gekonnt charakterisierten Kopf mit einem Kostüm und einem Hintergrund, die alle zusammen ein harmonisches „Arrangement" bilden.
