Luxury Cloth: Cushion Cover

Not on view

Formed from two pieces of cloth, this square cushion cover is striking for its highly original design and the exceptional level of technical mastery. The panels feature three surface levels of pattern. A narrow pile band filled with an interlocking design creates a mazelike composition. This visual path is raised above an open ground filled with uncut pattern weft floats that form a lozenge network. The remarkable state of preservation suggests that the cover was never used but rather treasured for its beauty and rarity. The first 1670 inventory record of it, in the Swedish Royal Collections, mistakenly identifies it as “Portuguese.”
