Orders for the Sentinel at the Queen’s Apartment
Not on view
This document lists security rules for the guards at the entrance to Marie Antoinette’s apartment at Versailles. The prohibition of unknown persons, in particular clergymen, was prompted by the 1589 assassination of Henri III by a monk. The rules also address the danger of infection by diseases such as smallpox, which claimed the lives of many members of the royal family, including Louis XV in 1774.
