The Basin of Apollo and the Grand Canal

French

Not on view

This small gouache, a fairly faithful depiction of the Basin of Apollo and the Grand Canal as designed in 1664, effectively captures the liveliness of the gardens at Versailles. Forerunners of the modern postcard, views of European cities and monuments known as vedute were intended for the well-to-do public and aristocrats on the Grand Tour.
