Not on view

In this print the colorful roofs of the ancient Forbidden City in Beijing stand out against the city’s skyline, dominated by high-rise buildings under construction. A rainbow shines through the dark storm clouds like a benign revelation. The work reflects the rapid modernization and surging optimism for a better future stimulated by China’s reform policy in the 1980s.

Zhang Peiyi, an artist and teacher based in Beijing, is best known for his prints in water-soluble ink.
