Alphabet game in book form

On View Gallery Watson Library

These miniature games are characteristic of the portable travel games we enjoy today. Their handmade qualities make them feel precious, as they must have been to their owners, who preserved them for about 200 years. The alphabet game is carved from solid ash and decorated only with the letters "G R." The simple box manages to beautifully capture the essential aesthetic elements of a leather binding from the period. The domino box is carved of solid wood, inlaid with geometric patterns of wood and bone.
