Unfinished carved spruce gum box, M.A.B

On View Gallery Watson Library

This unfinished chip carved box is constructed like a spruce gum box, but larger. Like other spruce gum books, it is carved from a solid piece of wood, with slide openings at both ends; the bottom sealed with wood pegs. The front cover is decorated with the owner’s or maker’s initials, M.A.B. and a large Maltese cross. The entire box is covered in deeply carved repeating diamond and triangular patterning.
