Solid carved book : Holy Bible

On View Gallery Watson Library

Bibles carved from wood and stone, made as gifts or stand-ins for real bibles, were common in the 19th to 20th centuries. This solid wood bible is decorated with a rounded spine, three raised bands, and a false foredge clasp of pierced sheet metal cut in an “H” motif. The title HOLY/BIB/LE is incised into the front cover. The back cover is undecorated, and all edges are painted gold.
